Where’s My Pain? (hypnotherapy)

By Tasha Khachturian

  Dude - Where’s My Pain?

I’ve noticed that clients usually come to me after having tried many other avenues, frustrated and

searching for a solution. Living with chronic pain can be debilitating. It doesn’t matter what kind of pain it is; arthritis, back pain, migraines, the pain of cancer treatments, irritable bowel syndrome… the list goes on. As if the physical pain were not enough, there is also an emotional component to pain. Add the energy drain from a long-term history of pain, and serious depression can result.

Fear, anger and anxiety all make things worse.

Many people who suffer from chronic pain are on some kind of pain medication. Unfortunately the brain habituates to these drugs, requiring higher and higher doses. Hypnosis works in a different way, causing the brain to stop responding to pain signals. In the hypnotic state clients enter a place of inner absorption, concentration and focused attention where they are very receptive to positive suggestion.

The management of chronic pain can be greatly helped through hypnosis. Good candidates for hypnosis are people who can easily become absorbed in a sunset or a good book, and who have the ability to become immersed in their imagination. During the hypnotic process, we’ll deal with negative feelings and emotions. Here, the capability of hypnosis to shift trends of thought becomes important. It is an extremely important factor that the client accepts that relief is possible. Hypnotic regression to the cause of the problem can lead to understanding and relief. Relaxation, imagery and hypnotic analgesia are utilized in this process so both the emotional and the physical aspects of pain are dealt with accordingly. Motivation is always a key factor in hypnosis. The trick to using hypnosis for pain management is for the client to learn self-hypnosis so that

they have tools whenever they need them. Most clients grasp techniques quickly and gain comfort.

The PCAT Formula for Helping People Make Changes with Hypnosis

By Matt Jefferson

Conversational hypnosis can be a benefit to any person. It help change lives in such a way, it will help people live happier with a healthy state of mind; it can also help in overcoming problems; better someones future; and ultimately achieve what is desired. One of the tools that can help you as the hypnotist in doing all this is by using the PCAT formula. Essentially, this formula is aimed to overcome a traumatic or stressful event in the life of a subject. The unique and very useful characteristic of this formula is that it can be incorporated even in everyday conversations.

PCAT stands for problem, confusion, active solution and transform.

P. Identify if your subject really has a problem and what is it. There are times when subjects are in-denial of a problem or may not be aware of it. As the hypnotist, your job is to activate this problem, let the subject know what he can do about it and ultimately help the subject find a solution. When a person is aware of a problem, the mind starts to light up and makes it possible for the solution and problem to find one another and get together inside the mind.

C. Initiate confusion. This is not to traumatize or scare your subject. Instead, confusion will trigger a whole new state of mind on your subject. Confusion will help break a pattern in the life of your subject that led him to the problem he is facing. Then confusion will induce trance that will make your subject try to escape confusion. This momentary event will help give way to thinking of solutions. Lastly confusion will then bypass resistance. It will focus you subject in trying to get out of confusion rather than compete with your help.

A. Activating a solution. Confusion will pave the way to this step. But also, you can make use of other different skills in conversational hypnosis such as story telling, emotional triggers, reliving a past experience and visualization. You will find that solutions will not surface in only one instance. It will take for both you and the subject to really work and find it. Patience is a must.

T. Transform is the tool that will attach the problem to the found solution. Combining the problem and the solution is the integral part of the whole PCAT formula. When the whole process is over, transformation from problem to solution is the most rewarding. It is essential though, to make sure that the process, experience and solutions will positively influence the life of your subject.
